Piglette by Katelyn Aronson & Eva Byrne (2020)

This week’s book review is about the picture book Piglette by Katelyn Aronson and Eva Bryrne.

Summary: As the youngest of seven, Piglette is prim, proper, and just a little bit persnickety. She leaves the pasture to follow her snout on a perfumed adventure in Paris. Fans of Fancy Nancy, Olivia, and I Am Famous will delight in how Piglette finds her place with a perfect mix of home and Paris.

What I Enjoyed

  • Piglette’s story problem is very specific to her character as prim pig. Let’s just say the answer is on the tip of her nose.
  • I loved all the alliteration. I didn’t realize how many fancy words begin with the letter “P”.
  • I adore stories that take place in cities, especially in a place I’ve never been too. Katelyn’s words and Eva’s art makes me want to visit Paris!

Mentor Text Moments

  • For Authors: Katelyn uses many words to lean into Piglette’s POV. From using fancy words like “Voila” to characterizing Piglette’s persnickety tastes when she says, “P-U,” this story is full of carefully selected words that give us a perfect picture of character, setting, and theme.
  • For Authors: The story is a great example of a three-act structure. We meet Piglette in pasture in France and follow her to Paris. When Piglette returns home, manages to bring the best of both worlds in a satisfying solution.
  • For Illustrators: Eva’s art is fabulous from beginning to end. Her pink palettes are bubbly. She uses sparkle and shine with a dainty restraint. My favorite detail in many of her spot illustrations is that the ground looks like a brush stroke!

Note: This book was reviewed as part of an early reader copy.
