If there were a game where you are asked to phonetically spell out random sounds, I’d like to think I’d win because I’m always looking up onomatopoeic examples. Just yesterday, I’m still trying to imagine what sound a chancleta (hard-soled slipper) makes against the floor.

Onomatopoeia is one of the many tools in a writer’s toolbox. For such a long word, it concisely conveys a specific sound. Using that tool allows you to use the hearing sense in your story. For the kidlit creator, onomatopoeia can quickly creates a mood (humor, suspense, anger, sadness) with a specific effect on the reader reading/listening to a story. For the youngest readers, those sound words can educate and delight in the space of of a random assortment of syllables.
