IN SHORT: SKETCHING IS SCULPTING.

When I sketch with multiple lines and jump around the figure (if it’s a character), I am finding the form and shapes of the character, not just drawing the exterior or interior lines.

Sketching is Sculpting

The idea that sketching is sculpting blew my mind. 🤯

It is the same reason why you might do a quick sketch and then refine it but something can be lost in the process during a redraw. They talk about the line’s flow being lost.

Bancroft says there’s a difference between a sketch and a drawing. Sketches/gesture drawings are rough, searching lines/strokes. A sketch may be a drawing, but a drawing is not a sketch.

Loosening Up

Sometimes it is just letting go and loosening up. Hold your pen differently, lean back, draw from a different angle.

I know need to not being so precious with the marks I make.

Sketch vs Sculpt: I noticed that my shapes were more interesting even though it is mostly the same. I was thinking and still going with the flow. Pretty cool!
