Art Master Study – The Design of The Wimpy Kid

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid series by Jeff Kinney is one of my second grader’s favorite. It feels like it is really written and drawn by a middle schooler who makes good, bad, and realistic choices in the world.

Learn By Drawing

  • Readability: One of the quirks I noticed is that there are often gaps in the line work. Whether it is gap left near the ground or to offset the eyes, the gap is obviously intentional to make it easier for the reader to understand what they are viewing.
  • Simplicity: This character is also drawn as if it were designed by the main character, Greg, the wimpy kid. There are simple shapes and few details. It looks like Greg used one pen to draw himself, all lines have the same weight and it is only in black and white. The wimpy kid also has gangly arms, wiry legs, with a slouch and a frown.
  • Consistent World: All the characters and objects in the world drawn by the main character look like they have been designed by the same person. For example, all characters generally have simple eyes and minor details that stand out. Rodrick, his brother and antagonist, is distinguished by spiky hair and thick, mean eyebrows.
