I am a huge fan of podcasts. It might be because I love learning. Or because I pick up different things when listening. Or because I can multitask. Either way, a great podcast is a goldmine. If you are interested, take a listen to these podcasts:
Podcast Spotlight: Visual Storytelling
The Visual Storytelling Podcast # 108: this episode has several interviews hosted by Charles Oatley from students in their visual arts mentorship program. The conversations yielding fantastic tips.
Here are some of my takeaways:
- Using Backgrounds: be specific! It is the difference between drawing A table and drawing THE table. Every object has a story.
- Idea Explorarion: use thumbnails to explore ideas big picture ideas rather than redraw scenes.
- Drawing Loose: Five minute drawings aren’t meant to be beautiful. If it isn’t working, toss them out. Starting over is part of the process.
Podcast Spotlight: Writing Excuses
The Writing Excuses podcast is a masterclass of craft in fifteen minute sprints. If you are just getting started, listen to season 10 which covers generating ideas from writing beginnings to endings. Every episode includes writing homework and transcripts. Excellent for #kidlit writers interested in short stories or longer fiction, but for the most part, the craft advice is applicable to any story.
