Bunbun and BonBon by Jess Keating (2020)
Summary: Bunbun has everything a bunny could want except a friend. Everything changes when they meet Bonbon, a fancy, talking candy. The pair strike up a fabulous friendship with plenty of humor and heart in this graphic novel for newly independent readers.
What I Enjoyed
➡️ Kid relatable: I appreciated how the main characters became friends because their names sounded similar. Often times you children become friends for the smallest things.
➡️ Conflict: I appreciated when the characters didn’t always get along or had different perspectives. For example, Bunbun doesn’t know what to think of BonBon at first.
➡️ Emotion: The characters experienced a wide range of emotions relating to friendship. They were happy, lonely, frustrated, scared, silly, nervous, and more. I was rooting for them all the way.
Mentor Text Moments
➡️ For Authors: With only dialogue, Jess includes plenty of moments where the characters connect to each other and with the readers.
➡️ For Illustrators: Appealing character designs and simple backgrounds to let the main characters shine.
➡️ For Illustrators: Expert pacing via panels versus full pages art and full spreads.
