Getting Started in Picture Books /1

Posted by

Want to write or draw picture books, but not sure where/how to start?

Reading a lot and often in any genre you want to break into is essential. Picture books (pbs) are aimed to 5-7 (board books are for 0-3 and longer pbs for 7-9) on average between 300 to 500 words. Picture books need the illustrations to tell the story, too, if not, they wouldn’t be picture books!

For this tip: read 5-10 picture books a week (published in the last five years) and break them down. Do this often and look for patterns!

  • Who are the characters?
  • Where is the setting?
  • What is the ONE problem?
  • How does the problem escalate?
  • How does the problem resolve?
  • What part do the illustrations play in telling the story?
  • Why do you think kids like reading this story?

These tips were adapted from Storyteller Academy’s Master Study Assignment.
